Governor Andy Beshear continues to steer Kentucky through a global pandemic, focusing on keeping our people safe and saving lives, rebuilding our economy in every corner of the commonwealth and protecting our most vulnerable. In response to the worsening financial situation at Kentucky State University, the state’s only public historically Black college or university (HBCU), Beshear’s budget grants the school’s request for $23 million to stay afloat. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said earlier Saturday the death toll 'could end up exceeding 100.'. Andy Beshear’s veto pen has had a busy 10 days. With 25 rejections of bills passed by the General Assembly, Gov. Matt Bevin’s administration that gave schools money for meeting certain performance goals. Andy Beshear vetoed House Bill 4 on Friday. Notably, the governor’s budget proposal would do away with the performance fund, an initiative of former Gov. There’s also a slight disparity in higher education funding, where House Bill 1 provides $895 million in base funding and another $67 million in performance fund money for both of the next fiscal years – a bump from the current $860 million in base funding – while Beshear’s crosses $1 billion in both years. Though the budget appropriates $214,752,800 to be spent proportionally by school districts based on their transportation costs, another $59,693,500 is appropriated to be spread among the districts evenly. Andy Beshear announced Monday he has appointed Kimberly Baird, of Lexington, as Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 22nd Judicial Circuit of Kentucky, effective October 1. For school transportation, the funding model in House Bill 1 advantages rural school districts, potentially at the expense of more populous urban and suburban districts. 8/31/2023 0 Comments Beautiful science infographicThis post does not necessarily reflect the views or the endorsement of the editorial staff. The British Library is running an exhibit entitled Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight from 20 th February to 26 th May 2014. Unfortunately, our scientific understanding of cannabis was stunted by decades of draconian drug laws. In addition to its perfectly legitimate recreational uses, cannabinoids such as THC and CBD have been shown to offer relief from a multitude of health issues without the side effects that often accompany other prescription drugs. As the legalization movement has taken root across the country, more and more people have come to realize that hemp isn’t just for stoners and hippies. The public perception of cannabis has come a long way over the last decade. But perhaps aluminium's most recognizable incarnation is the aluminium beverage can, hundreds of billions of which are produced annually. As a thin foil, aluminium is a packaging material par excellence, flexible and durable, impermeable to water, and resistant to chemical attack - in short, ideal for protecting a life-saving medication or your favourite candy bar. Aluminium alloys are a construction favourite, finding use in cladding, windows, gutters, door frames and roofing, but are just as likely to turn up inside the home: in appliances, pots and pans, utensils, TV aerials, and furniture. By the early 1900s, aluminium had already supplanted copper in electrical power lines, its flexibility, light weight and low cost more than compensating for its poorer conductivity. It wasn't only the transportation industry that grasped aluminium's advantages. With this hefty CV, it's not surprising to find aluminium in many other vehicles, including ships, cars, trucks, trains and bicycles. And whereas iron rusts away when exposed to the elements, aluminium forms a microscopically thin oxide layer, protecting its surface from further corrosion. The resulting alloys, sometimes more malleable than aluminium itself, can be moulded into a variety of shapes, including the aerodynamic arc of a plane's wings, or its tubular fuselage. However, alloying it with elements such as such as copper, magnesium, and zinc, dramatically boosts its strength while leaving it lightweight, obviously an asset when fighting against gravity. While lamenting one's presence in an 'aluminium box' doesn't have quite the same ring, there are several good reasons to appreciate this choice of material. It's a common refrain of the flying-phobic, but maybe they would find comfort in knowing that the box is actually made of aluminium - more than 66000 kg of it, if they're sitting in a jumbo jet. Even then though, this makes no assumption about the actually size of the “full frame” – it could be anything. This is also meaningless to 35mm digital cameras unless (as on some Nikon 35mm cameras) you have the option shoot with less than the full frame. 35mm movie cameras using the full size film gate were called “full frame” or “full gate” Smaller gates could be used to save film (which would run through the smaller gate slower). So, by this definition, if your camera, like mine, does video or live-view: it ain’t “full frame” – no matter how big the sensor is.Īnother meaning of “full frame” originates in the movie industry. To compensate, these sensors have an array of “micro-lenses” on them to collect light from the full area of the photo-site and concentrate it down into that 30% area. Because they have shift registers next to the photo-diode, only around 30% of the photo-site is light sensing material. They have Interline Transfer CCDs that are equipped with shift registers interleaved between the lines of photo-diodes to transfer the data off the photo-diode and onto an accumulation register (which can then be clocked out to the storage array while the light sensitive area is collecting photons for the next frame – allowing electronic control of the image start and stop and doing away with the need for a mechanical shutter (we then have to ask why manufacturers add mechanical shutters to their cameras – which cause all kinds of problems with vibration and for high speed flash – I don’t know why they do this and can’t find any explanation). Because of this they cannot do video, or live view.Īlmost all digital cameras today are not full frame. Without interline shift registers, full frame sensors are cheap to make, but require a mechanical shutter to stop and start light collection. This also makes them subject to light smear as they are still collecting as the data clocks out line by line to the storage array. They are called “full frame” as they shift the full frame out of the sensor to the storage array at a time. The space this frees up can be occupied by more photo-diode (around 70% surface area is light sensitive in a typical full frame sensor) making them more sensitive to light. “Full frame” refers to a type of CCD sensor that does not have “shift registers” interleaved between each photo-site to shift the values off the photo-diode. In fact it has nothing to do with the size of the sensor. The cheapest equivalent full frame lens regarding the field of viewis the EF 17-40mm f/4L at 749. For example, Canon’s cheapest wide-angle zoom for crop sensor cameras is the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 at 279. “Full frame” does not mean 35mm film sized sensor. Lenses designed for crop sensor cameras are a bit cheaper than equivalent lenses designed for full frame cameras. I always wondered – “who died and made 35mm the reference size?” It’s popular for sure, but it seems a bit strange to call 35mm sensors “full frame” when there are plenty of bigger ones and even bigger slabs of film available. 8/31/2023 0 Comments Triangular tessellation creatorTry to use only right triangles or maybe even special right triangles to calculate the area of a hexagon!įrom bee 'hives' to rock cracks through organic chemistry (even in the build blocks of life: proteins), regular hexagons are the most common polygonal shape that exists in nature. You can even decompose the hexagon in one big rectangle (using the short diagonals) and 2 isosceles triangles!įeel free to play around with different shapes and calculators to see what other tricks you can come up with. You could also combine two adjacent triangles to construct a total of 3 different rhombuses and calculate the area of each separately. In that case, you get two trapezoids, and you can calculate the area of the hexagon as the sum of them. For example, suppose you divide the hexagon in half (from vertex to vertex). If you want to get exotic, you can play around with other different shapes. We hope you can see how we arrive at the same hexagon area formula we mentioned before. After multiplying this area by six (because we have 6 triangles), we get the hexagon area formula: Where A₀ means the area of each of the equilateral triangles in which we have divided the hexagon. And the height of a triangle will be h = √3/2 × a, which is the exact value of the apothem in this case. This fact makes it much easier to calculate their area than if they were isosceles triangles or even 45 45 90 triangles as in the case of a square.įor the regular triangle, all sides are of the same length, which is the length of the side of the hexagon they form. For the regular hexagon, these triangles are equilateral triangles. If you don't remember the formula, you can always think about the 6-sided polygon as a collection of 6 triangles. Alternatively, one can also think about the apothem as the distance between the center, and any side of the hexagon since the Euclidean distance is defined using a perpendicular line. You can view it as the height of the equilateral triangle formed by taking one side and two radii of the hexagon (each of the colored areas in the image above). Just as a reminder, the apothem is the distance between the midpoint of any side and the center. The formula for the area of a polygon is always the same no matter how many sides it has as long as it is a regular polygon: For those who want to know how to do this by hand, we will explain how to find the area of a regular hexagon with and without the hexagon area formula. The easiest way is to use our hexagon calculator, which includes a built-in area conversion tool. If option “Qc” is not specified, this list is not computed. We will now take a look at how to find the area of a hexagon using different tricks. Triangulation due to numerical precision issues. 8/30/2023 0 Comments Aldiko calibre serverI can add NOOK & Kindle apps to read those books, but quite a few of mine are. Not sure why I couldn't get Aldiko how I wanted it, but I really just wanted a basic reader. I've added the free version and if it works like it appears to be doing right now, I'll go ahead & upgrade to the paid. You are the BEST! Thank you so much for going to the trouble to share all of this.Īnd it would appear that Mantano was the key. Mantano has the same functionality as Aldiko but has more annotation and library management tools. If you have an issue with space in your SD card, keep in mind that Aldiko stores books in a particular folder so "importing" a book into Aldiko means creating a second copy of that book.Īn alternative is to use Mantano (there is a free and a paid version) which scans your entire device (or user specified folders) for epubs/pdfs and imports them into its library without creating a secondary copy of the book. I have approximately 4g left on the SD and 4g left on the internal memory. I have ~ 100 books and 50 apps in my nook color. What size SD card are you using? As a reference, I use an 8g SD card. You can also click on the checkbox on the right to import books in batches. Then, you can choose to either open the book or import it into Aldiko. Just click on "files" and click the up arrow until you see the different directories and select emmc. In addition, if you do have epubs in your internal memory, you can access them directly through Aldiko. Use a file explorer like ES File explorer or Astro that will allow you to get to the root drive. Really? You can't see it at all? Even under the settings where it tells you how much space you have in there? You should be able to access the internal memory both from the Nook Color itself AND from your computer. I'm no expert by any means but here's a link to a post with more detailed instructions. Have you tried using calibre's content server with aldiko? You can use aldiko (or many other ereading apps) to browse through your calibre catalog via your wifi connection. But I like the Akdido reader, and I like how it sorts my books. Whew!Ĭome to think of it, surely there is a better way! It works, but it takes a bit of time. THEN I go to Aldiko, cruize to the SD card, look for e-book folder, and import from there. My e-book file contains a file for each author, with the books contained therein. That is where Aldiko recognizes the books. Then I need to go into the SD card (using PC and file explorer) and move the book from wherever Calibre uploaded it to a file called e-books. Use Calibre on PC to open the book, convert it and then upload it to the Nookcolor. It's a bit tedius (perhaps someone else has a better method) - but basically I download from either B&N or Amazon to my PC. I think my set up is exactly like yours, and I finally figured out how to get things working. I guess what I'm asking is, is there a "dummies" method for those of us who are very good at following directions but for whom all of the technical language isn't necessarily intuitive? I don't see any way of downloading, though, short of selecting one book at a time, which is way too tedious. I've created a Dropbox area for them and they're all uploaded. Ideally I'd love to get them all in the same place, but for now, I'd just settle to have them there, period. This doesn't include many, many more that are in ADE, B&N & Amazon. My current Calibre library comprises almost 1300 books. I've tried creating my catalogs, but I'm stuck! I'm guessing they're on a partition that can't be read somehow?Īnd I won't even get into the whole catalog thing. Exploring the drive from my PC doesn't show them either. I've loaded Aldiko and it can see my SD card, but can't find any books on it, even though Calibre says they're on there. I've gone round & round, searching, etc., but I'm pretty sure I just don't know what I'm looking for. However, I still have a very large number of books that I cannot access that is, all of my previously sideloaded epub books. I just haven't been able to.ġ) I've loaded the Nook app so I can read all of my B&N books.Ģ) I've loaded the Kindle app so I can read all of my Amazon books.ģ) I've authorized my ADE account so I can read all of my Adobe DRMed books. Now, though, I'm coming up short, because as much as I love having this as a tablet, I can't seem to get back the functionality of an ereader! Hopefully this is something relatively simple to fix. I'm into the Market & having a great time playing around with all of the apps I could previously only get on my D2G. I finally gave in & caved so that I could really get my money's worth from my NC. |
